PS1 and Banff decisions (June 28, 2002)

The PS1 Award is the top award in the visual arts given out by the Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaíon. It carries a studio in New York, an apartment and a stipend, for a year (more here). The award for 2002-2003 goes to Declan Clarke. It costs the Council around ó40,856 a year. Artists in Northern Ireland were very upset earlier this year when the Arts Council of Northern Ireland decided no longer to send an artist to the PS1 scheme (more here).

If Clarke's name sounds familiar, it may be because of an article published in the Irish Times Magazine on April 7 of this year. Clarke was portrayed, ironically enough, as one of a whole generation of artists allegedly ignored in their home country and finding fame and succour in England. Rarely has the Irish Times published such a misleading and poorly informed article on the visual arts.

Meanwhile Brendan Earley has received the Banff Residency Award.

Responses so far
Comment 1 The PS1 with all it's good intentions always seems to suffer
from the Bermuda Triangle syndrome for the selected N.Irish
artists .They disappear and are never seen again!
Comment 2 ACNI should take more interest in the artists they send to
New York and there should be a one person show back in
Belfast to highlight the artist and their work.
Comment 3 When are the ACNI going to hold a PS1
group show in N.Ireland. I for one want to see the work of
the selected artists and what they get up to once sent to
New York.
Comment 4 It's too much money for so little return
,literally.
