RHA defends O'Dea / Canning takes RHA award / ev+a winners (May 28, 2003)

RHA stands its ground as Mick O'Dea does a mini-Sensation

Shades of Marcus Harvey's Myra Brindley at this year's RHA Annual exhibition in Dublin, as artist Mick O'Dea chose to show a portrait of convicted murderer Brian Meehan. Meehan was imprisoned for his part in the murder of journalist Veronica Guerin. Guerin's brother, quoted in the Irish Independent yesterday, said that displaying the painting was "offensive and hurtful" for the Guerin family. O'Dea was quoted in turn as saying, "I had no idea it would go so far but a piece of art has its own integrity regardless."

The RHA has issued a statement on the matter, in which it "fully supports the right of its Members to choose their own work for exhibition." You can read the full press release here.

Michael Canning takes RHA Award

Also to do with the RHA, but perhaps better news: Michael Canning has won the second Hennessy Craig Scholarship of 10,000 euro. You can read the full press release here.

ev+a prizewinners announced

Christine Mackey: Provisional, 2002, mixed-media drawing installation, dimensions variable; photo/courtesy Kieran Cashell; see a larger version of the image by clicking here.

Limerick is host to what can claim to be Ireland's premier open-submission exhibition. The prizes for this year's entry have just been announced. Chistine Mackey takes the overall prize, and 4000 euro, for her installation Provisional.

A joint award was made to Julie Merriman, Jesse Jones and Joe Lee. The 6000 euro of the award comes with a condition attached: that the three artists collaborate on a joint exhibition. Virginia Perez-Ratton of Costa Rica, curator of ev+a 2003, sees these artists as linked by their engagement with the residents of St Michael's Estate, Inchicore, Dublin.

Comment 1 Shades of Marcus Harvey's Myra Brindley?? Shurely shome
mishtake..(ed.) Aside from this typo, there is a
fundimental difference between copying an already
over-publicised photograph, using handprints of children,
and making a painting directly from the individual person
posing. One was quite obviously made to cause deliberate
controversy, the other to make an image. It is reasonable
to presume that this by-product of Mick O'Dea's work within
the prison service, had been considered at some length
before he decided that it was a portrait worthy of being
exhibited on its own artistic merits. I have known Mick
for a good many years and regard him as someone of immense
integrity. Incidentally, where does this controversy leave
the photographs of Meehan, which were printed in many
newspapers around the time of the trial. Does painting,
even in the contemporary climate of over-exposure to visual
imagery, still possess a special, iconic power that
photography does not?
Yours Sincerely,
John Philip Murray

Comment 2 I thought the portrait of Brian Meehan by Mick O'Dea in the
RHA was arresting!
Comment 3 Hindley, of course.... Peter
Comment 4 Does it make a difference whether or not the Meehan portrait
was for sale?
Comment 5 so what? everybody has done their share of evil.
Comment 6 Isn't there a question of context within the choice of venue
here...! considering the RHA has a repretation for showing
"safe" art ...otherwise non Contempoary...i lookforward to
seeing the protrait .
Comment 7 Get those flashing symbols of the website they are
distracting and utterly annoying!!!
