Quickly noted: City Arts Centre sold / O'Malley Award / Belfast arts strategy (July 8, 2003)

City Arts Centre goes virtual?

Holiday absences have delayed the relaying of several news items, including that Dublin's City Arts Centre (CAC) has been sold, for 4.25 million euro. Former IMMA supremo, and current CAC director Declan McGonagle and his team have for some time now been considering the path the CAC might tread in the future. Part of the soul-searching exercise takes the form of Raising the Issues, a seminar being held in the CAC tomorrow, June 9. Details of the seminar here.

With the sale of the building it seems increasingly likely that the CAC will perform the role of a facilitator of art events, rather than being a host for events within new premises of its own. A somewhat virtual CAC, in other words, though all could change. Certainly, over four million euro should ease matters.

Cashman gets O'Malley Award

The prestigious O'Malley Travel Award, named after the late Tony O'Malley and sponsored by Waterford Crystal, has gone to Clare Cashman. Cashman, from Blarney, and a graduate of NCAD, Dublin, plans to use the 2,600 euro travel money to visit a dormant volcano in Nicaragua.

New arts strategy for Belfast

Belfast's city council has been embattled of late. It cut arts funding just at a time when the city itself was pitching to become European City of Culture. The irony was not lost on artists - see news item here. The council has now launched a new arts strategy. You can read the press release here, or go to belfastcapitalcity.com to look for further details (good luck).
