Bono the artist (January 13, 2004)

A limited edition set of lithographs of Peter and the Wolf by U2 singer Bono goes on sale today at the London Art Fair to raise money for the Irish Hospice Foundation, which gives assistance to patients with long-term illnesses.

The prints will be on display at The Cynthia Corbett Gallery. Gallery owner Corbett said of the works, "When I saw them I was just blown away, I thought they were sensational." Bono is less confident of his artistic talents, having stated: "I love art too much to call these anything other than marks on paper."

Popular opinion, however, seems more than impressed by Bono's artistic endeavours, the original works having been snapped up at a charity auction in Christie's at the Rockefeller Plaza in New York last November. Sixteen watercolour-on-paper images - six paintings and ten studies - all sold for a total of $368,000 to benefit the Irish Hospice Foundation. In the star-studded auction room, REM's Michael Stipe paid $14,000 for an image of a duck. The highest price was $60,000 for a stylized self-portrait of the singer as Peter.

The illustrations were created by Bono and his two daughters, Jordan and Eve, for a cloth-bound limited-edition book that accompanies a CD of a modern take on Sergi Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf, performed by Gavin Friday and the Friday-Seezer Ensemble. Intended to raise funds for the Irish Hospice Foundation, Bono became involved because "these angels who were so ready to look after my father in his losing fight with cancer asked me to illustrate the book that accompanies the music."

This is the second enterprising fundraising project involving contemporary art that the Irish Hospice Foundation has intiated in the last couple of years, the previous one being Art:pack, a limited-edition set of 54 playing cards, each card having been designed by an Irish artist. The originals works by the eclectic group of artists, which also included Bono, were sold at auction as well.

The edition of 200 lithographs is sure to raise further funds for the charity, with each for sale at the Cynthia Corbett Gallery for an undisclosed four-figure sum. If you can't afford this, however, the book and CD are still on sale for a mere €20.
