O'Donnell + Tuomey for Venice Architecture Biennale 2004 (Wednesday May 26 2004)

It was announced yesterday that Shane O' Toole, architect and critic, has been appointed as the Irish Commissioner for this years Architecture Biennale of Venice. O'Toole and his Deputy Commissioner, the architect Paul Kelly, have chosen Sheila O'Donnell and John Tuomey (who have been in partnership since 1988) to represent the Republic of Ireland at this year's competition with their project designed originally for the Furniture College at Letterfrack, Co Galway.

This same project was also a finalist for last year's European Prize for Architecture. This work is like a composite landscape and has the appearance of a miniature city in the hills. The layout of the architecture has a gradual curved approach which allows visitors to move easily between the different structures. O'Donnell + Tuomey believe that all architecture should suit its surrounding cultural context, and this idea is reflected in this particular work as in all their others.

O'Donnell + Tuomey are well know for a number of landmark buildings; they include the Gallery of Photography, the Irish Film Centre and the National Photographic Archive, all in Dublin, and the Lewis Glucksman Gallery, currently nearing completion at University College Cork.

This year, for the first time, the Republic's representation at the Architecture Biennale will be housed at the Arsenale, making it much more accessible to visitors.
