Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane has just announced that there is to be a temporary six-month re-opening of the Parnell Square-based gallery to facilitate a temporary exhibition programme which is to begin this 15 April. The news comes during the gallery's year-long renovation period, due to be completed by Spring of 2006 by Dublin-based architects Gilroy McMahon. The opening exhibition, entitled Clarke and McDevitt Present, is a project involving artists Declan Clarke and Paul McDevitt who have been specially selected to choose five artists to respond to the formal gallery spaces, as well as the gallery's permanent collection, which will include the Francis Bacon Studio. Most people will probably remember the duo from their recent project on O'Connell Street, Tischtennistisch, the interesting table-tennis installation which was part of the Communism exhibition at Project, but the artists have also organised various exhibitions including The Armchair Project in Cynch in 2000, London, and Play it as it Lays - 17 artists from Los Angeles, at the London Institute in 2002.

The five artists selected have never shown in Ireland before, and come from a variety of media backgrounds including painting, drawing, video and installation-based work, so the final outcome could be an interesting reinvention of the gallery's collection. The list of selected artists included is Bjorn Dahlem, Sophie van Hellermann, Ian Kiaer, Corneliua Quackbeck and Matt Calderwood, and they will each be presented with a gallery space in which they are to make new work on site. Clarke and McDevitt will also use the Sculpture Hall to create work, which will in turn act as an introduction to the exhibition and to the other chosen artists.
