Imperial War Museum likes Sean Hillen's Troubles (Thursday 27 October 2005)
Troubles (Thursday 27 October 2005) compiled by Allyson Corcoran
According to a report in last Saturday's Irish Times , a substantial slice of surreal Northern Ireland strife is to be purchased and displayed by the Imperial War Museum in London. It has agreed to pay 74,000 euro for a series of 26 photomontages by Sean Hillen from his Troubles series. Born in Newry, Hillen has sought to portray the dual-identity angst of Northern Ireland's residents to outsiders. In his work, Hillen places scenes from his photographs of Northern Ireland incidents, such at the hunger strikes, into familiar foreign images. In 1998 the Museum had purchased four works from Hillen's photomontage collection, but recently decided to purchase the remaining available images.
You can read a CIRCA review of Hillen's recent Paris show here , and a CIRCA assessment of his Irelantis book here . Hillen's website is here .
A show of the Troubles series will open in the the LAB Arts Centre, Foley Street, Dublin, on 8 November 2005. Some Irelantis and Troubles works are also currently on show in the Stone Gallery, Pearse Street, Dublin.
