Major award for Factotum / NCAD students upset (Monday 14 November 2005)
Factotum gets Paul Hamlyn Award
Richard West and Stephen Hackett, collectively also known as Factotum, have jointly been named as one of five recipients of this year’s Paul Hamlyn Foundation Awards for Visual Arts. The cool £30,000 they receive will doubtless help with the court case West is taking against Belfast City Council for alleged breach of the European Convention of Human Rights, following its withdrawal of a £5,000 grant to Factotum. Some members of the Council were offended by the content of Factotum’s excellent publication, The Vacuum. Apparently inexhaustible, West is also co-editor of Source magazine.
Another Award winner, Ian Breakwell, is well known on these shores, particularly at the National College of Art and Design, Dublin, where he frequently tutored. Alas, in his case the Award is posthumous.
West's case is due back before the courts in Belfast on 30 November. More on that story here.
NCAD students not happy to move
According to a report in Saturday's Irish Times, students at the National College of Art and Design, Dublin, are not at all keen on the possible resiting of the College to University College Dublin's Belfield campus. They fear loss of the College's identity and loss of access to resources in town, among other things. They're protesting, but not yet revolting.
