Head of Fine Art Retires From CCAD (Wednesday 13 June 2007)

compiled by Rachel Simmons

Dr. Stuart White, Head of Fine Art and Ceramic Design at Crawford College of Art and Design in Cork, is retiring after 20 years. He had come to Cork in 1987 from Rutgers University in Newark to fill the Head of Fine Arts position, then left vacant since 1982. Among his significant contributions to the College have been to write the Bachelor of Arts degree proposal, which was put in place by the Department of Education, as well as to start the Masters Degree Program at CCAD. An exhibition designer and curator, as well as an artist himself, Before coming to CCAD, White was Head of Sculpture at Rutgers, where he put their Robeson Gallery on the map and drew the attention of the art community to New Jersey at a time when the arts were focused in Manhattan.

(This development does not seem to be linked to CCAD's recent debate concerning the campus's possible move to the suburbs. As reported here recently, CCAD's city-centre campus is troubled by an infrastructure that has fallen into disrepair and the general poor quality of the buildings comprising the school and the artists' residences and studios in the surrounding area. Despite this, there has been protest against moving from the culturally rich city centre to the "culturally devoid" suburbs.)
