New Waterford gallery / Dunne gets go-ahead (Wednesday 21 November 2007)

O'Hallorans combine to launch Mary Street Gallery

Mother and son, Mary and Robbie O'Halloran, are jointly launching the Mary Street Gallery in Waterford tomorrow night. Robbie is a practising artist, and his reviews will be familiar to Circa and recirca.com readers. Mary "brings years of retail management in Waterford to this project," according to the press release.

The line-up in the opening show, OPENHOUSE, is impressive: Thomas Brezing, Michael Canning, Cora Cummins, Paul Doran, Michael Durand, Paul Kelly, Fiona McDonald and Mark Swords. The launch is tomorrow, Thursday, at 7:30 pm, and the show runs until Saturday 15 December. More at www.marystreetgallery.com

Ben Dunne bets on art

Ben Dunne, of the supermarket family and now a fitness-centre entrepreneur, is widening the range of his activities. Recently, he received Board Plearnála's permission to pursue his art-gallery project.

Close to his Carlisle health-and-fitness centre - Kimmage, Dublin 12 - Dunne is to set up an art warehouse. A cricket pavilion will be turned into an art gallery. "Dunne has a deep interest in art," according to Fiona Tyrell in the Irish Times. Dunne's plan is to help young artists. He'll allow them to exhibit their artworks, charging only 25 percent commission on the sale price, though galleries usually charged up to 50 percent. This lower commission rate may have a significant impact in the Irish art world. Many artists welcome Dunne's plan, and want to showcase themselves in his art warehouse.

Dunne's art gallery will also provide a money-back guarantee to his customer - an unsatisfied person can return an artwork within six months. Ultimately, if the art warehouse is a success, Dunne will expand the low-cost gallery model in Ireland, mainly in Cork, Limerick, Galway, Belfast...
