Temple Bar, Dublin, has a new art gallery: the Guinness heir, Sebastian Guinness, has opened his own gallery in Eustace Street.
Currently, Guinness is exhibiting a Warhol painting, Farah Diba, plus two other works. Farah Diba, 'Empress of Iran' and daughter of the Shah, was exiled from Iran in 1979, after the Iranian Revolution. Diba was apparently unaware of the whereabouts of the portrait, and now it has surfaced in Temple Bar.
In a rare interview given to the Times of London in 2004, socialite, art lover and noted beauty Farah Diba said she did not know where her Warhol portrait had disappeared to.
"I've been trying to remember what we had in the palace," the Empress said. "There was a small Utrillo, a Marie Laurencin, a Vlaminck in the living room, a small Renoir in my husband's bedroom -- God knows where it is now. And then I had the Andy Warhol of me, but I have no idea what's happened to that," Diba said. Sebastian Guinness aims to acquire others pieces for the gallery, such as sculptures by American artists and works by jewellery designers. In addition, the new gallery will be one of the exhibition sites for the Totally Swedish Festival, which will take place in Dublin from 26 February to 2 March of this year.
Charles Saatchi to take the spotlight away from Tate Modern?
Thanks to a partnership with the Phillips De Pury and Co auction firm, this spring Charles Saatchi will opena new free museum on King's Road in the Duke of York’s HQ, London. 6500 m2 will be dedicated to contemporary art.
As the admission to the new gallery is free, Saatchi’s venture looks set to vie with the Tate Modern, with the collector expecting up to 1,000,000 visitors a year. In addition, two classrooms will be integrated into this new space, specifically built for pupils and teachers, to allow debate with experts about contemporary art. It is hoped to encourage young people to appreciate and become interested in contemporary art.
The museum is proposing long opening hours - from 10am to 10pm every day, except on Sunday when it will be closed at 8pm. With these opening hours, the museum will apparently have the longest opening hours of any British gallery or museum.
For the opening of the gallery, Saatchi has planned a show of contemporary Chinese art. This will be followed by an exhibition by 'new' American artists and a show of contemporary Indian art.
