The inaugural Davy Portrait Award has been won by Dublin-based artist Joe Dunne, a graduate of NCAD, through his painting of his fifteen-year-old daughter Cara. He scoops a cool £10,000. Martin Wedge took second prize, and Gary Coyle third.

In case you're wondering, one of the finalists or 4% of the 24 artists shown, is female - Jennifer Trouten.
The show of the finalists' works is at the Naughton Gallery in Queen's University, Belfast, until 31 January 2009. It then moves to Farmleigh Gallery in the Phoenix Park in Dublin.

Gale gone
This depressing news from Temple Bar Gallery and Studios (again via VAI):
Temple Bar Gallery & Studios wishes to alert the media and members of the public to the fact that a painting by the well known Irish artist Martin Gale was stolen from the gallery on Friday 21 November last, some time between 5.15 and 5.30pm.
The painting was part of a large group exhibition at the gallery, entitled ‘Winter Salon’, and had been produced by Mr Gale specifically for the exhibition. The painting is oil on canvas, measures 25cm x 25cm and is a landscape depicting a flooded field of crops with a row of trees in the background.
Temple Bar Gallery & Studios in particular wishes to alert other galleries, exhibiting venues, and auction houses to this theft and asks them to be extra vigilant regarding security on their premises.
If anyone has any information as to the whereabouts if this painting should contact Garda Enda Dowling at Pearse St Garda Station on 01 6669000.

It is a small piece, but particularly striking.
