Welcome to the 100th issue of CIRCA Art Magazine. Having come this far, we must be doing something right! And glancing back over the 21 years of our existence we've done a lot: around 1,500 articles and reviews, around 4,000 images of artworks, and much more. No other publication comes close in its dedication to and analysis of contemporary art and visual culture in Ireland.

In the arts nothing stays the same for long. CIRCA has always evolved, and we are currently implementing a lot of changes. With this issue the magazine has a new size and shape; we hope you approve! We've created the post of Editorial Adviser, based in Northern Ireland, to balance moving operational aspects of the magazine to Dublin. We've popped in an extra editorial column - Fifth column - to be written by a different writer each issue. We've also instituted a preview section called See. There is more to come, and we know there is much we could do much better.

This issue is about looking back. We have commissioned four of the best commentators on art and visual culture in Ireland to look back with us, with the aid of the 99 previous issues of CIRCA. And we are honoured to have Artworks for CIRCA, thanks to the numerous artists who have participated, many of whom have made enormous contributions to art in Ireland over the past 21 years.

CIRCA has been very lucky. It has had a lot of help and goodwill, a lot of enlightened guidance from its Board members and previous editors, a lot of excellent contributions from artists and writers, a lot of support from visual-arts venues around Ireland. We've been very fortunate to find a home in Arthouse. And although the magazine often adopts a sceptical distance from the two Arts Councils, we wouldn't be here - at least not in this form - without them. Every issue of the magazine involves teamwork, and CIRCA is also blessed with a very good, ever-changing team of co-workers, writers, artists, freelances and interns.

The visual arts in Ireland have transformed themselves over the last two decades. You can get a very good feel for the changes from the articles printed in this issue. There is still an awful lot to do before artists and the visual arts get the support and recognition they need and deserve. At CIRCA we hope to be there for every stage of the journey.
