Introduction to Art and Design theme
This
section of CIRCA was convened by Language, an independent creative
studio based in Dublin.
Language works as a commercial design and advertising agency as
well as pursuing independent projects. Our self-initiated works
span fields as diverse as artists' books, multi-media theatre,
and film. Language is also an originator of the on-going project
Multiples, which commissions limited-edition artworks from established
and emerging contemporary artists.
Nomenclature, authorship, originality and collaboration - these
are themes running through our discourse as designers and cultural
practitioners. We invited Luke Clancy to give us his thoughts
on the interface between art practice and design practice, exploring
the increasingly blurred boundaries of visual culture. Henri McKervey
and Declan Long look at intellectual property issues: when is
derivation deemed legitimate appropriation, and when is it plagiarism?
Declan Long observes the rise of the brand in all areas of visual
culture, Keith Murray takes up the challenge of branding art institutions,
Jane Austin charts the new territory staked out by 'graphic authors',
while John Wood asserts the continued supremacy of drawing through
all visual cultures.
