Julie McGowan has taken inspiration
from the concept 'infinity', natural phenomena and laws of
nature for this exhibition of photogram prints and light installations.
Eight large cylindrical light-boxes illustrate patterns made
by halogen bulbs and water to form constellations and mini
universes.
The most interesting works are two
installations that incorporate the interplay of natural light.
These installations engage with their environment and place
the theme of natural phenomena in an immediate and present
context.
A small hole in the window blinds
allows reflected light from passing cars to echo on the large
suspended cylinder and reflect back on a projection screen.
A bundle of clear drinking straws is suspended between the
screen and a small red light that traces a pattern through
the straws and, even though the original movements are random,
the drawn pattern settles into a circular back and forth motion.
The artist's interest in physics
laws is expressed in a refined aesthetic manner, offering
original work and an appealing appreciation for photo-energy.
In drawing with light, McGowan has captured the unnoticed
in the infinite source of light that surrounds us.
