Verbs: boundaries of experience that escape each into the other.

I began making performances in 1993 in Glasgow, using my body - my gestures and attitudes - with mostly found materials, to shift awareness and expectations of the use of public space - of streets, wasteland, and architecture.

Site-specific research remains important to my praxis. I often create performances within installations that evolve through my actions and those of the spectators. In 1999 I began exploring how to create living archives. Rather than storage facilities, these would be situations in which documentary forms and historical sites would be exposed to the body as it engaged with the processes of memory.

The images show my most recent performance-installation at Trace, Cardiff (www.trace.org). In it, I continued to explore different ways of immediating the poetry and politics of memory. During the seven-hour performance I arranged and re-arranged myself, with documents and objects from my archive, around a reconstruction of the bookshelf that is built into my attic at home in Belfast.

A four-minute film of edited footage played on a continuous loop. Patterns arose and dissolved, time (e)lapsed; people, observations, and re-collections, came and went, seen and unseen. Each hour I wrote one of seven verbs on the wall.

Julie Bacon is an artist, currently based in Belfast; she also curates art events and publishes texts about culture and art.
