Circa 118:

Mulholland x 2

Following his very well received curatorship of Northern Ireland's contribution to the 2005 Venice Biennale, Hugh Mulholland has been chosen to curate Northern Ireland’s 2007 presence there. He will present work by Willie Doherty. Mulholland was picked in an open application process.

Undaunted by the issues surrounding the abrupt closure at the end of February of the Ormeau Baths Gallery in Belfast, of which he was Director, Mulholland has also opened a new gallery, the third space . The inaugural show featured the work of Mark McGreevy. the third space is at Suite 11/12, Scottish Mutual Building, 16 Donegall Square South, Belfast BT1 5JA; www.thethirdspacegallery.com

Tipp’s new arts centre

There is a new arts centre in Thurles. Linked with a new library, and designed by the studio of Niall McCullough and Valerie Mulvin, it incorporates a gallery space. The gallery is, according to the press release, “An introverted, reflective space … its walls splay out towards the river front, taking up the geometry of the site. Shielded behind the monolithic concrete entrance wall, the space can be glimpsed through a porthole when arriving, or alternatively closed off for hanging. The inaugural exhibition, Tipperary exposed , featured works by artists living in or from the Thurles area; it was curated by Ruairí Ó Cuív.

Culture versus demolition

The artists of Creative Exchange, whose studio spaces are located in the Linenhall Works Mill on the Castlereagh Road, Belfast, have been upset, to say the least, by a recent notice to quit the premises. Nor are they impressed that the intention is to demolish the 1840s structure and replace it with a shopping centre. It is something, they feel, that East Belfast scarcely needs, and they have been very active both in seeking community support and in generating media attention for their cause. Failing all else, they may be saved by the roof of the building: its structure has been identified as “unique within Ireland” and the Ulster Architectural Heritage Society is now lobbying to have the building listed.
Engine Room Gallery, Belfast, will host a Creative Exchange exhibition from 2 to 24 February 2007 which will “highlight the benefit of taking a creative approach to the regeneration of our industrial heritage.” More at www.creativeexchange.org.uk
