CIRCA 89 Art Education Supplement

FOREWORD BY MO MOWLAM
SECRETARY OF STATE FOR NORTHERN IRELAND

Over the years CIRCA has built up an established reputation in Ireland, both North and South, and further afield, with those who have an interest in cultural life here. I am pleased that the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and An Chomhairle Ealaíon have worked together closely in supporting the publication of the magazine. Through their co-operation, both organisations have for many years brought numerous benefits to the arts communities of both parts of this island.

I am delighted that this edition of CIRCA focuses on the educational value of art. A hugely rewarding and valuable area of study in itself, art has also the power to illuminate and enrich the entire learning process at every age of life. It gives us the confidence and the flexibility to question assumptions about the way we lead our lives; and it helps us to define and express our sense of identity. Most importantly, the creative process in art, and in its appreciation, helps to promote greater understanding and tolerance of the cultural diversity which is such a salient feature of life in these islands.

I commend CIRCA for its continuing tradition of honest and thoughtful debate about contemporary visual culture.

Marjorie Mowlam
Secretary of State for Northern Ireland
