Oh Christmas Tree1000

SHIRLEYHeavenly Berries, Beaded Icicles and a Space Star are three of the 75 individual ornaments which will adorn the 14ft Presidential tree at Arás an Uachtaráin this Millennial Christmas. The ornaments were designed by students in a collaborative project between the Glass Department and Metals Department at the National College of Art and Design, Dublin. A limited-edition of one of the ornaments has been commissioned by President McAleese, who will present the tiny works of art as Christmas gifts for 1999.

Art comes out of the closet

Art locked up unseen in the closets of museums is a terrible thing--so isn't it great that IMMA will be opening a series of new galleries to the public in February 2000? The galleries, adding 1000 square metres to the museum's exhibition space, will focus on special collections--from the museum's own, as well as from other public and private collections throughout the world. Picasso on newsprint will join Bacon on paper for the first inaugural exhibition--which should attract new eyes to some works which have never been seen (outside of the closet).

Happy Birth

Triskel Arts Centre turns 21, so send them warm wishes and have some fun. Their request is simple (one might even say quaint): an A5 sheet with "poem, picture, plea, or plaint." So recall those memories, become the Bard, from your tall tales, Triskel will create a card. The commemorative card will go on sale; for circa 5-pound, you too can avail! The young centre's future is sure to be great--so send in a card, for 'tis you they celebrate.

For more information (and a version in prose), ring Triskel @ Cork 272022 ('tis Michelle Whelan who knows).

Us news

Oliver Whelan has become the new Chair of the Board of CIRCA Art Magazine, replacing Stephanie McBride, who will remain on the Board. Ollie has been much involved with the redesign of the magazine. He lectures in the Painting Department of the National College of Art and Design. Meanwhile Belfast-based Daniel Jewesbury joins our panel of Contributing Editors. Already well known to CIRCA readers, find a new report from him on page 20 of this issue. The CIRCA team thank Steph for her many years of excellent service at the helm.

And so as not just to celebrate ourselves, we note that Kathy McArdle has moved from the Abbey Theatre to become the new Director of the Project Arts Centre, Dublin, stepping into the shoes of Fiach MacConghaile. We wish Kathy, and Fiach, Ollie and Daniel, for that matter--the best of luck in their new positions.
