Autumn 2001 - News Bits C97 The Republic's Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands, Síle de Valera, T.D, has announced the granting of IR£36 million (E47.7m) to the promoters of 44 projects under the Arts and Culture Enhancement Support Scheme (ACCESS). The scheme is "designed to lead to the provision of high standard arts and culture infrastructure, and covers three strands of facility...: New Facilities; Redevelopment of Existing Arts and Culture Facilities; and Smaller Community-based Projects." According to the press release, "A total of 180 applications were received under the scheme seeking funding in the order of IR£224m (E284.4m), and all applications meeting the eligibility criteria were considered by an independent advisory committee established by the Minister for this purpose. Particular emphasis was placed on community-based projects and 17 such projects are to receive grant aid." The announcement will be particularly gratifying to those visual-arts supporters in Carlow, who have been tireless in their work for the annual Éigse festival. The Centre for Contemporary Visual Arts there receives IR£2.5 Million. More details here . New CIRCA poll We're thinking of some big changes at the magazine and we'd welcome your input. Please check out our new poll . Lovett for Temple Bar job Word is that Marian Lovett is to be the next Director of Temple Bar Gallery and Studios, replacing Norah Norton. Appointment at Project Project, much-embattled over the past year, has finally appointed a 'Curator of Visual Arts'. Grant Watson studied Fine Art Administration and Curatorship at Goldsmith College, London (where Project's Tim Brennan, Curator of Talks and Critical Events, used to teach). He has since curated in Britain and India. He is also editor of WOW , "a new journal of contemporary art published by Thames and Hudson." Three lucky bunnies Happy news for three artists : -
Gemma Tipton, who frequently writes for CIRCA, who was once CIRCA's manager in its Belfast office, and who recently had a show in the Basement Gallery, Dundalk, has been awarded the Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaíon's Bursary in Architectural Criticism . -
Clare Langan is to represent the Republic at the next São Paulo Bienal. Previous representatives have been Brian Maguire and Alanna O'Kellly. -
Another Clare, this time Mark Clare, has been awarded the Alice Berger Hammerschlag Trust Award. According to the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, the award is worth £2000 stg, but the southern Council has it at IR£788. Definitely apply to the northern Council. Clare has recently shown in both the Ormeau Baths Gallery, Belfast and the RHA Gallery, Dublin, in each case in important group shows. | Gemma Tipton: From Foot Series , digital print, 20 x 25,5 cm; courtesy the artist | Businesses that pay Business 2 Arts has published the results of the National Arts Sponsorship Survey 2000 (which in fact covers 1999). Overall the findings suggest a substantial increase in arts sponsorship - somewhere between 19% and 47% since 1997. The visual arts appear to do very well, coming second in their classifications overall, and taking 15% of total sponsorship to the arts, well ahead of 'Theatre and Drama' which took 8% and just behind 'Multi Discipline Arts Festivals', also at 15%. It is interesting to compare the relative levels of private and public funding of the various artforms. For example, theatre appears to receive four times as much money from the Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaíon as do the visual arts (29.1% versus 7.5% of expenditure in 1999 - see a previous news item here ). The full report is available, but it will cost you: IR£50, or IR£25 if you responded to their questionnaire. Bank loot for Caroline McCarthy The winner of the inaugural AIB Prize, worth a total of IR£15,000 and linked to a show in Dublin's Temple Bar Gallery, is Caroline McCarthy. Artists were nominated by art spaces around Ireland for this prize; purely coincidentally, McCarthy was nominated by Temple Bar Gallery. McCarthy, along with Peter Richards, was nominated by CIRCA to participate in L'Art dans le Monde in Paris last year. | Caroline McCarthy: Tetracam , 2000, installation with juice carton; courtesy Green on Red Gallery | Art Educators online Iomhá is the name of the Association of Visual Arts Educators working with/for Children.
