A $3.5 million grant will be given by the Irish government to build a new Irish arts centre in Manhattan.  The announcement was made by Michael Martin, minister of foreign affairs, and confirmed last Tuesday by the New York council speaker, Christine C. Quinn.

Ms. Quinn, in a telephone interview, said that the new Irish arts center will most likely reside at the current location on 553 West 51st Street. The centre, which was founded in 1972, hosts exhibitions, educational programmes and also has a 99-seat theatre.

Additionally, the city of New York has also committed $7.75 million in capital financing for the center.  It is expected that there will be additional contributions from the federal government and private donors.

A start date for the project has yet to be confirmed.
