News item 617 It'd be interesting to see how many visitors attended the gallery during the corresponding period. Posted by Niall on Tue Jul 15 17:00:02 2008
News item 603 re. Comment 2 - most people who get turned down for grants have to fume in silence. I don't see anything 'sour-grapish' about this item, it's very interesting to see a breakdown of how grants were disbursed. At least recirca is in a position to publicly question the decision-making. Is nobody allowed to question decision-makers, for fear of being accused of sour grapes? Posted by A Davey on Mon Jul 7 09:32:48 2008
News item 603 'sour grapes aside, what are culture ireland up to?' i think we need a new, sleeker definition of 'sour grapes', to cover this kind of circumstance.really, isn't this a little grubby?
News item 606 hang on a minute... surely the feller who won the prize at art statements, duncan campbell (born dublin 1972) is also the first artist from ireland to exhibit there? unless he was slower installing his work than garrett?
News item 603 As someone who received a grant from Culture Ireland this year, far below the amount required to cover anything like the cost involved, I checked the CI website to see how other applicants had got on. Whoever decided that the vast majority of applicants receive less than 1000 euro in this day and age is not realstically funding anyone to represent their country abroad. I empathasis with CIRCA but at least they knew they got nothing, whereas the majority seemed to have got less than was required.
News item 602 try and make work that doesn't topple over in future!
News item 595 My objection is to the way the words 'young' and 'emerging' are seen as interchangeable - what about those of us mature students whose art career is also only just beginning?
News item 595 A new press release by way of clarification would be nice; nicer still would be ageism-sensitive clarification in the mind of the Commissioner, which expresses itself in an age-neutral selection of artists!
News item 595 Perhaps by way of nipping the 'ageist' issue in the bud, perhaps 'emergent artist' is a more PC term. Not that I am anyone to rewrite a commissioner's press release...A bolschy dark horse of a choice, which is always preferable to an 'obvious', uncontestable decision. I wish Mr Corrigan all the best.
News item 598 It's hilarious that the ACNI are jumping on the band wagon regarding Wilkes's success. There is absolutely no way that the artist would have had any chance if she had stayed in N.Ireland.All galleries are closed shop, even though they are publicly funded ie ACNI , they are in a permanent state of closed shop.!
News item 596 Let's hope there's a stronger female presence than the last 2 NI Venice representations.
News item 595 Isn't that why the term 'emerging' is usually used?
News item 595 Yum, fudge!
News item 595 I think the reference to "younger" artists refers to artists who are early in their careers so in this sense age is not comparable to race or gender.
News item 595 surely its not legal to discriminate on the basis of age?
News item 595 I totally agree with the selection of Caoimhin Corrigan, but I dont care either for the age thing. To think this is anti ageism week in Ireland!
News item 595 This can't be right! Try "Its not racism just the recognition that white artists are in a different position to black artists, will bring a different dynamic to Venice and benefit differently from the opportunity." Or "Its not sexism just the recognition that male artists are in a different position to female artists, will bring a different dynamic to Venice and benefit differently from the opportunity." Or "Its not xenophobia just the recognition that Irish-born artists are in a different position to immigrant artists, will bring a different dynamic to Venice and benefit differently from the opportunity. "
News item 595 Its not ageism just the recognition that young artists are in a different position to older artists, will bring a different dynamic to Venice and benefit differently from the opportunity.
News item 595 What's this ageism in the selection of the artists? Otherwise, great decision.
News item 595 Well deserved! The right person for the job!
News item 595 a ludicrous decision for Venice... The biennale is not some country backwater. Let's hope that the commissioner is up to the challenge of last year's high standard, and not fall back to the abysmal standards of the previous two Irish outings in Venice
News item 588 Is this the photograph of the exact painting hanging in the art gallery? I only ask this because the newspaper shows another.
News item 543 Quote "They are politically engaged, challenge our inherited power structures and examine cultural production"Please cite a meaningful example of this. I'm sure people would be interested to see it.
News item 543 This comment system is terrible. It's impossible to follow anyone's argument because there aren't any names attached to comments. Earlier, I said that I found the Vacuum paper silly. I didn't make any comments about 'real' artists, though. I don't care who's a 'real' artist and who isn't. I care that this Vacuum paper was so dumb. It had the appearance of a democratic or open forum with a number of writers coming together on certain topics. However, these topics were never made known in advance. This meant that the non art school public, who picked up copies of the Vacuum, would never have a chance to contribute to it and open things up a bit. Instead it was run by a little clique who got into a self righteous squabble with the city council. Excellent? Hardly.
News item 542 When is his wallpaper range coming out? I'd love a few rolls.
News item 543 You don't have to look too hard to find begrudgery here. north and south.Factotum is an art practice supporting countless other practices, artistic and otherwise. They are politically engaged, challenge our inherited power structures and examine cultural production. They don't make pretty pictures. It is a selfless, intelligent art practice and if anyone wants to critique it, write to the Vacuum or talk to them about it. Or go on talk radio. Don't hide behind an anonymous comments page.
News item 587 Ah yes, Claude Money, knew him well, rolling in dosh!
News item 543 Have they a fan club or can I join their group, I'd like to be a Factotum groupie too!
News item 543 Yeah they're traditional folk singers, I bought their c.d. Belfast Songs , not a patch on Flanegan & Allen though.
News item 543 They're singers as well don't forget that and they know how to smoose as well, very important aspects of being defined artists.
News item 543 It would seem that not everyone has such a narrow definition of artistic practice as comment 9. Factotum managed to pass themselves off as artists to the Paul Hamlyn Visual Art Award panel in 2005. But they those rich folks give £30,000 to just anyone.
News item 543 factotum have an excellent track record, broad in output and always interesting (whether the work existed in a gallery space, as a publication or a CD/recording etc.) To suggest that they are not 'real' artists is like suggesting that only painters wearing paint spattered smocks and berets are 'real' artists. It is ridiculous and outdated.
News item 543 for example one writes for a local photography magazine, and the other is an organizer & administrator, the word 'artist' doesn't feature here.
News item 543 Please elaborate on what you think constitutes a 'real' artist...
News item 543 They are taking away a good opportunity from a real artist/s.
News item 543 Please elaborate and tell the rest of us what's so excellent about it.
News item 543 What?! The Vacuum was excellent!
News item 543 Do they still make that silly newspaper that's full of nonsense? I used to look at that and hoped I would see something interesting in it. Eventually I gave up. It was always just silly.
News item 573 I am in despair. The snobbishness and the discriminating that goes on in the arts of Ireland. Some people have changed their names to be more accepted, dating back as far as William Conor. I feel that CIRCA encourages this division. The clique of CIRCA board shows its true colours. Can we only express ourselves with our tribalism?
News item 573 Comment 6 got your reaction didn't I. Good come back (which I expected by the way)
News item 573 What? Don't criticise this website to encourage it to improve, what sort of dumb statement is that? Just get this site updated and put more content, images, reviews etc in and maybe more of our artists might make a living from their art instead of depending on the dole and the useless arts funding in the north and the boring basic workshops we have to provide. I for one am not meeting any of these researchers supposedly using this website. Get out to Stormont on Monday and the various forum next month and rant and whinge until we get this place properly working. And just in passing IMHO the average blog spot has more info and fun than this Circa website. Slugger blows it away.
News item 573 Hey lay off the Circa website! This site has been very beneficial to alot of artists and it has gained a very interested audience globally. It has become a valuable tool for international artists ,curators and writers to gain access to the arts in Ireland & N.Ireland.
News item 573 oh now i know what it is, its an art website magazine. Why on earth am i on an art website?
News item 573 I have no idea what CIRCA is but I love cheese
News item 573 Regarding the Circa website and the publication more generally: The website is, as a previous comment said, pretty unimpressive and hasn't kept up with developments in the design of the print format, though that may be coming, redesign can be time consuming and expensive. It is also true that the magazine has come some way since it’s earlier black and white incarnation. It does seem that there is a two-tier system at work, for articles, which appear online, and articles, which appear in the printed publication. It would make more sense to have more content of the magazine on the site, at a later date than accept many articles for inclusion on the site that the magazine does not believe worthy of print or simply broaden the scope of the magazine itself.More generally, many do think the magazine as pretty much an insider publication, with so much interesting Irish art at present a very select few artists get covered, many over and over again. It is difficult to ascertain what the criteria is for the inclusion of many artists time and time again when others are given no coverage what-so-ever. It may be argued that these artists are more influential; making a greater impact and so forth yet on closer inspection this seems not to be the case. This is not to say that many of these artists should not be featured, they should but not necessarily so repeatedly or at the exclusion of others. This is not an issue of one artist or another, rather representing more clearly what is happening within visual culture both in Ireland and Irish art internationally. In the future it would be good to see the magazine being broader in it's scope but with the present ethos it seems unlikely. It would be interesting to know what others think.
News item 573 Look this Circa website really makes me despair. Can no one take control of it and make it look like it has some new content once in a while and loose some of the really old stuff. It seems as if it is caught in a time warp with interviews from several months ago as recent items. And the format? Duh! Ugly and cumbersome or what, come on 21st century.
News item 566 Why is everyone going on about a Damian Hirst tank having a leak? All art requires maintainance. The leak is being fixed by Hirst's team - no problem. There's no issue here.
News item 564 The painting by Campbell Sharp was wonderful! Very authentic and well done. The rest of the artwork was frankly simple and rather wierd. Why didn't you show the cartoon by Lars Vilks that offended so many thin skinned, no humor muslims? The real GOD, not allah, bless America!Christina[Notes: (1) the reference is probably to the painting of Campbell Sharp by Catherine Kingcome, reproduced here. Not sure what the other artwork was, perhaps the postcard competition somehow?(2) To say the least, we are not in favour of generalisations about any groups, particularly ethnic or religious ones; the feedback reprinted above here is, however, just about worth displaying as an indicator of a certain mindset.(3) Needless to say, perhaps: no-one should be put under a death threat.Ed.]
News item 560 he looks like a wee boy who'se been told to stand in the corner by his teacher for being bold
News item 560 I'm not sure about this commision either but reading some of these comments really makes me hope it is a sucess.
News item 552 I hope the visual arts people behind MAC are astute. There's a long history of multidisciplinary art spaces starting out with plenty of room for the visual arts, only to see that space steadily eaten into by other artforms as the plans approach being turned into bricks and mortar.
News item 280 I think the Archibald Prize is a great thing for school students to study in art. I found it hard to research for a winner of the Archibald Prize with all the information I needed because I had to look up more then 3 sites. This site gave me most of the information but I couldn't find the size of the painting. You need to have photos of the portriats actually in the gallery to give viewers a better veiw of what it looks like. I think the Archibald Prize is great and I enjoyed researching it for my year 7 project.
News item 542 I absolutely love Anthony Christian... his work is out of this world !!!!!!
News item 542 I don't think I can take any more of Anthony Christian. He's just so wonderful!
News item 519 Yep more informative site would be useful! Not much on there really.
News item 543 'This town ain't big enough for the both of us'
News item 280 go arthahahaha so yepgo who wins
News item 543 they're a group. like 'Sparks'...
News item 540 Comment 2 zzzzzzzzzzz
News item 543 4 artists? Factotum are artists ?sorry aren't they a group?
News item 540 League of Gentlemen: Extraordinary really, that the new direction of the OBG may well focus more on 'the local'. Its previous director was never immune to this, simply that he was always conscious of also putting 'the local' in an international context. He also strengthened an awareness of the best in contemporary art practice in Northern Ireland. Best case scenario- that the OBG continues to do this. Worst case- '...we're local people, we don't want any of that kind of trouble here!'
News item 540 Another government appointee who will know nothing about the real world... a key appointment by the Government for Culture in Ireland... and we get a government lackey
News item 286 ....such a beautiful and poetic building....it makes me happy just looking at some pictures of it...great stuff : )
News item 533 I think your bulletin should read 'Beck's futures has been dropped by the ICA '
News item 533 Oi ! Peter Richards whats the full address of your new gallery & whats its new name then?
News item 342 Dear Isobel Harbison, Apologies for the tardy reply. Jan de Groot is a fake and invention of Jef Bourgeau, the founder of Detroit MONA. You wasted 3 hours, but so did some others.
News item 286 Yes the machine hall and production benchroom leak. Still a very good design but too good to be in a place like letterfrack! - Former Student.
News item 519 Is this a public or private gallery? does the ACNI or BCC fund it? Can artists submit their work to Hugh for consideration?
News item 530 An arts organisation being prescriptive? Does BBeyond assume they have the last word on the terminology of 'performance art' or are they afraid that they will be tarred with the same brush? What did Stone do that was any different from a performance act?: he sprayed a slogan on the wall,he shouted this slogan and he then charged at his audience with a fake gun and grenade. Andre Stitt eat your heart out!
News item 530 Bbeyond seem to have more evidence than is out there to come to the startling position they have taken. Are they saying we should not raise the expectations of prisoners and ex-prisoners because anything they do in the 'real' world will be judged by 'real' artists as fake. Or is this just Stone.
News item 530 This isn't even worth commenting on. Now Stone gets more publicity and this time it's an art magazine web site. He will be chuffed to find himself on Circa with a critiquie from Brian Connolly, this will go nicely on his c.v. Why does BBeyond feel the need to defend and define themselves?
News item 530 "self indulgent and utterly self obsessed" seems to describe quite a lot of performance art, surely Stone's display can't be ruled out as art for that. I've seen a few people rebranding self harm as 'art' as well so rebranding any act seems possible. Perhaps the gun was a found object.
News item 527 John Burke was the most influential artist to come out of Cork in the 20th century. A generation of Cork sculptors, many with now international reputations, owe their initial sculptural experience to him as a teacher at the Crawford School of Art. He had great integrity and suffered fools badly. In the last number of years his profile as a sculptor had diminished through ill health but his influence was and still is immeasurable. He will be greatly missed.
News item 526 Well done Tomma you really deserved to win.Loved the paintings and your sincerity , no gimmicks here.Well done!
News item 519 The 3rd space website isn't very informative, what about artists c.v.s, bios and images?
News item 521 I'm sure Fred & Rosemary West, Ted Bundy, Dennis Nielson, Ian Brady, Peter Sutcliffe, Dr Shipman could make a killing from their doodles and scribblings.
News item 506 Let's see the date on the last obg blog was 4th May.....that's a big nothing for 4 months!I'm glad this old chestnut has been laid to rest.
News item 506 Comment 3, what are you talking about??The OBG is still a very exciting issue. Why, have you not seen ACNIs latest top NEWS story on its web site www.artscouncil-ni.org ?Apparently a top hair dresser has just visited the gallery. Gosh! Would you believe it.Another interesting thing is if you go to the new OBG web site www.ormeaubaths.co.uk and use their web search to do a search on the word art and then do the same with the word wedding. The results are very telling.
News item 506 Could Circa please remove the 'campaign for the obg' .It doesn't really matter anymore, the dust has settled.
News item 513 Psalter - any mention of the destruction of Lebanon?
News item 510 Very saddened by the death of Noel. A man of great genorosity and understanding, a committed supporter of young artists and a fine teacher and administrator. A notable iconaclast too. I suspect he will give his God something to think about when they meet! Samuel Walsh
News item 510 Very sorry to lose Noel. He was a powerful addition to the art scene in Ireland.
News item 511 Two great choices!
News item 506 I came accross another article about Hirst which gives a little explanation to his state of mind...Hirst write the following poem, "Now I know/Now I know what I want/To live forever/For a while"...I guess it's the state of his mind and it seems to depict the notion of this work. Trying to make something last forever only if for a short while. I just think that the American collector who bought the piece takes this into consideration as this is art not science. I think the shark should be left untouched.
News item 506 oh my godthe new obg web siteis this the really the vision for the future of the OBGa dedicated contemporary art gallery???with equal status given to exhibitions, weddings and corporate eventsthis is a really bad start and hammers home just how way out of touch the arts council is in what it understands as the contemporary art spacefarcical!
News item 497 Close the stupid place and feed the £300,000 back into the arts. It's never really going to serve the visual arts properly and this injection of funding would.
News item 500 http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200606/s1662600.htmCase Dismissed
News item 500 The case was dismissed this wednesday morning June 14.
News item 501 Can she sue? Obvious question but it continues to beggar belief how those in arts-authority-positions continue to get away with messing around those who create the culture these people are supposed to represent.
News item 497 Comment 3 clearly is not aware of the Arts Council's programme over the next 6 months. Unless you or your work is in storage in some corporate/ civic collection they won't be approaching you or any other artist directly for a show.
News item 497 Now that there are actual developments regarding the re-opening of obg, can artists please keep in focus that it is only a building that perhaps may become more approachable.
News item 497 Given the Arts Councils of Northern Ireland’s admission that they have not made sufficient case to government for funding for the arts in Northern Ireland, resulting in almost static funding since 2003, coupled with the erosion of confidence in the sector reported in the Sunday Times (June 4th), does this not now call into serious question the positions of Rosemary Kelly, Chair, Roisin McDonough, Chief Executive and Noirin McKinney, Director of Creative Arts?Is it any wonder they have been unsuccessful in making a case for increased funding/ When pressed at last week's public consultation meeting about the extent of their lobbying to government, Nick Livingston, Director of Strategy, admitted that the best they have come up with is a desk calendar sent to all MLAs. Cold comfort for the 82 organisations funded by the Arts Council which are now fighting for survival.Would there time not be better spent lobbying government more effectively rather than their pathetic attempts at playing at being curators at OBG (2)?
News item 497 I think the word I'm looking for to describe the Arts Council of Northern Ireland's decision to reopen the Ormeau Baths Gallery is 'hypocrisy'.
News item
News item 479 I have been watching the BBC the Impressionists. It seems that we have'nt learnt anything since their time. I know Northern Ireland is behind times but surely not that far back. One other comment about national galleries. I was in Newcastle upon Tyne which has roughly the same population of Belfast and a very similer working class back ground, but they have far more contempory art space than us. The OBG had nothing to do with local art God only knows we have plenty of talent.
News item 493 yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
News item 493 NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
News item 493 Shame!!!!!
News item 491 it's a complete mess.... another piece of ill-conceived sculpture eye sore...
News item 479 yup, it's true... IMMA sell out Northern Irish arts
