Question: What aspects of CIRCA would you like to see changed? What's not getting enough attention at present?
Respondent no. 1 Current show reviews and previews.Could enlarge book review section also.
Respondent no. 2 (Firstly an artist , secondly a web designer) Artist's Intervention in the magazine and indepth coverage on specific artist's / artist's groups in Ireland, their projects, ideas or manifestos.
Respondent no. 3 (Artist) More concentration on actual visual art works.
Respondent no. 4 (artist) the quality of the magazine is TOO high. the pages SHOULD NOT be so thick and glossy. it should be focusing more on the serious content, rather than the shiny, surface.
 Respondent no. 5 (painter) painting.
Respondent no. 8 (web designer who wants to be an artist again) I would like to see more individual articles on artists.
Respondent no. 9 (Technology Strategist) Quality of writing could be vastly improved, and a more outward looking approach rather than self congratulatory
Respondent no. 10 (art historian - university lecturer) spatial culture
Respondent no. 14 (Artist) More frequent issues and thereby current reviews. More specialised invited writers and comment.
Respondent no. 15 (photo based artist/thinker) it would be nice to see a wider and more critical viewpoint taken in reviews of shows...there is a feeling that circa sometimes fears "threading on toes" of established artists and galleries....also it would be great to see more time given to younger artists and maybe a open forum colum for which reader could each week submit there own articals to
Respondent no. 22 (lecturer) the term 'visual culture' is too narrow. design and architecture could be better represented. a more diverse range of material would attract a more diverse range of contributions.
Respondent no. 24 (painter) good painting, good painters, good painting exhibitions and good writing on all the above.
Respondent no. 26 (art) more info on local and international submissions?

Question: Are there other comments you would like to make?
 Respondent no. 1 No
Respondent no. 2 (Firstly an artist , secondly a web designer) The scottish magazine'Varient'is one to watch! It contains a lot of interesting articles that highlight very relevent issues surrounding art/technology and society. The fact of not having to include one's name or writing under a pseudonom may be a contributing factor in the frankness of approach? Another attraction is that it's free!
Respondent no. 3 (Artist) Too much of the magazine is given over to theoretical/philosophical/critical writings. While these have their place they are tending to overshadow the coverage of actual art practice.
Respondent no. 4 (artist) reviews of shows are important - critical reviews.
Respondent no. 5 (painter) I would like to see some articles about painting and possibly written by painters as well as poets and writers. I would like to see pieces about painters who are not usually promoted by the media but who are really good.e.g. Charles Tyrrell, Recently there was an essay in Modern painters about Barrie Cooke.(written by Seamus Heaney). I think Jo Allen(Cork) and Frank Golden (Co. Clare),to mention just two, would make a good job of writing features about painters and painting. Obviously there are others.
Respondent no. 8 (web designer who wants to be an artist again) I think the issue of circa with the art and technology supplement was excellent, well written and contained information not easily got from other sources, I did a search for the artist Jason Salavon on the net and the only decent article written was by circa-
Respondent no. 14 (Artist) tendency to overdesign in layout and colour schemes.
Respondent no. 22 (lecturer) although the production values are very high, i would question the need to have all pages printed full-colour. you might consider saving on the printing in order to add, for example, pull-out sections, loose leaf images or spot varnishes (on select images), from time to time. another suggestion would be to have the magazine properly 'designed' rather than doing everything in-house.
Respondent no. 26 (art) i answered this in the other one

Question: Do you read other art magazines? If so, which, and how does CIRCA compare?
Respondent no. 1 Favourably although a bit cumbersome to read
Respondent no. 2 (Firstly an artist , secondly a web designer) Circa is like a watered-down version of some of the glossier art magazines from other countries. I think it !!could!! do better, not by mimicking these other mags or by worrying/wondering how Circa compares with its American /English/whatever counterparts. In short,I suppose I'm asking what is it that makes Circa unique, because I don't know? By paying more attention to this question the answer to the other, I believe less-important, question of how Circa compares will follow.
Respondent no. 3 (Artist) Yes. Art Bulletin, AN, Modern Painters, ArtForum, Art in America etc etc.

Art Bulletin is most relevant here as it also deals with Irish art but concentrates more on the practice than theory. As a working artist it is far more relevant to me but a greater balance between art and theory would be even better.
 Respondent no. 4 (artist) artforum

art in america

artists newsletter

art monthly

frieze

contemporary visual arts

parkett

CIRCA feels too shiny and not enough critical writing. the layout is all over the place and often senseless and to the detriment of the work in question.
Respondent no. 5 (painter) I read Modern Painters, Contemporary Visual Art and occasionally Art Review which seems to be getting better,I also sometimes see the German magazine ART and the American Art magazines.I enjoy Modern Painters most for the quality of it's writers and for the features on different painters and artists. Circa can be interesting depending on who is writing but mostly it's concentration on new media is not intersting to me.
Respondent no. 8 (web designer who wants to be an artist again)
no.
Respondent no. 9 (Technology Strategist) ArtForum
ArtByte
Respondent no. 14 (Artist) Art Monthly
Flash Art
CVA
Respondent no. 15 (photo based artist/thinker) very good
Respondent no. 19 (artiste) yes. many. circa is not very engaging in comparison.
Respondent no. 22 (lecturer) i mostly read design history/theory magazines. although the production values are comparible to circa, the 'design' of design magazines is usually of a much higher standard. also the range of topics covered tends to be more diverse.
Respondent no. 24 (painter) Modern Painters, Contemporry Visual Art,Art Review, a-n, Art in america and various others. Circa rates poorly in comparison. The language is full of jargon and often incomprehensible..
At times the reviewers are not well informed.
